近期不少朋友抱怨自己遇见非常尴尬的处境,比如:吃饭没带钱,老板在训人自己没忍住偷笑,或者是把小抄传到监考员手中。真的大麻烦,好尴尬啊!今天就教教大伙除去awkward 以外还可以用那些办法来表达尴尬。
1.be in a devil of a hole
[俚]处境很尴尬
devil hole 直译就是“魔鬼洞”,形容自己处境举步维艰尴尬,就像是深入魔鬼的洞穴,英大想想都感觉可怕
e.g. Joe is in a devil of a hole.
乔目前处境很尴尬。
e.g. It put me in a devil hole of having to lie.
这令我陷入了不能不撒谎的尴尬境地。
2.a trying situation
难处境况,尴尬处境
“trying situation”除去可以形容严峻困窘意料之外,还有“不要意思的局面”,“让人伤脑筋的局面”
e.g. That is a trying situation.
那是一个不好意思的局面。
e.g. It was a trying situation.
这是一个叫人伤脑筋的局面。
e.g.The public finance of China is now in a trying situation.
国内财政正处于严峻的困窘境地。
3.“hot”也可以用来表示你的尴尬
①make it hot for him
使之对他有害的,叫你不好过。
e.g. The police say they'll make it really hot for Barry if they catch him a second time driving his car without tax.
警方说,假如他们第二次抓住马里没交纳牌照税,他们将会让他不好过的。
②in the hot seat
处于尴尬的处境,如坐针毡。
e.g.On the business front, IT executives are frequently in the hot seat when it comes to justifying their budgets.
在业务上,当涉及到说明自己预算合理性时,IT实行职员总是处于尴尬的地方。
P.S. “hot seat”也有身负重任,挑大梁的意思。
e.g.He is to remain in the hot seat as chief executive.
他将继续留在公司首席行政官这个身负重任的位子上。
e.g.You make the decisions - you're in the hot seat now!
你得做决定,这目前是你的责任了。
③in hot water
在热水里?它的意思并非“在热水中”,它的确切意思是指某人或某些人遇见很麻烦的问题了,表现得尴尬焦躁不安。
e.g.He was found cheating on the exam, and now he's in hot water.
他考试作弊被发现了,目前他可麻烦了。
e.g. I'm sorry I can't lend you money. I myself am in hot water.
抱歉,没钱借给你了,我目前也是麻烦缠身呢。
e.g. John lost his credit card and he was in hot water.
约翰丢失了他的信用卡,目前他如坐针毡。
4.Facepalm
捂脸
A facepalm is the physical gesture of placing one's hand flat across one's face or lowering one's face into one's hand or hands.
捂脸,指的是用手捂住脸或将脸埋进手掌的动作。
这个动作多用来表达沮丧或者尴尬,或者是“你如何这么傻愣”,“你开心就好”与“天下我只服你一人”等状况。
5.awkward
adj. 尴尬的;笨拙的;棘手的;不适合的
对于常看英美剧的孩子们来讲,这个词肯定很熟悉。
在MTV台播放由莫莉塔洛芙扮演的Awkward,就被翻译成《囧女珍娜》。所以,“囧”就能用awkard了。
e.g. There was an awkwardly long silence.
有一段让人尴尬的长期的沉默。
(英大朋友:就怕空气忽然安静了。就是这个意思了。)
e.g. The president laughed off the awkward situation.

6.embarrassed
adj. 尴尬的;窘迫的
e.g. She smiles at him and says, "I'm sorry if I embarrassed you.
她笑着对他说:“假如我叫你感到尴尬了,对不起。
e.g. Are you embarrassed for me?
你为我感到难堪吗?
7.discomfiture
n. 狼狈;挫败,崩溃
e.g.People laugh not only from pleasure or affection, but also at the discomfiture of someone else.
大家不只由于愉悦和喜欢而笑,也会在别人导致挫折或尴尬的局面时而笑。
e.g.He was really not masterful enough mentally, and he had witnessed her discomfiture.
他的确在精神上不够老练,况且他亲眼见到了她的狼狈状况。
